What is an annuity?

• An annuity is similar to a retirement plan in that you can fund it in a lump sum or a little at a time, and all capital in an annuity grows and compounds tax-deferred until you begin making withdrawals. Unlike retirement plans, however, there is no limit as to how much you can invest in annuities! What is a fixed annuity?

• An insurance contract in which the insurance company makes fixed dollar payments to the annuitant for the term of the contract, usually until the annuitant dies. The insurance company guarantees both earnings and principal.

What is a variable annuity?

• A life insurance annuity contract which provides future payments to the holder (the annuitant), usually at retirement, the size of which depends on the performance of the portfolio's securities.
